============================================================================== BASIC SOLAR SYSTEM EVENTS CALCULATOR Program by: Jay Tanner - 2026 This program computes the dates and times of the basic solar system events for any given year from 1600 to 2200 in any local time zone offset from UT. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE BASIC SOLAR SYSTEM EVENTS SYNOPSIS INCLUDES THE DATES AND TIMES OF: Full moons, new moons and the quarter phases. Lunar perigees, apogees and distances. Partial and total lunar eclipses. Seasonal equinoxes and solstices. Earth perihelions, aphelions and distances. Partial and total solar eclipses. Planetary perigees and apogees. Planetary perihelions and aphelions. Solar transits of Mercury and Venus. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ BASIS The positional computations, from which the dates and time were computed, are based on the NASA/JPL DE405 ephemeris and the IAU 2000B theory of nutation, referred to the true ecliptic, equator and equinox of the date. The dates and times of the solar and lunar eclipses and solar transits of the planets Mercury and Venus are based on the work of Fred Espenak, NASA GSFC Emeritus, and refer to the times of mid-event or a maximum point. Only the general times of the events are computed, not the finer details, since this program is only a general synopsis of basic events for the given year. The remote Delta T estimates are computed from the NASA polynomial expressions and resolved to the nearest second. The greatest uncertainty lies in the value of the Delta T, which can only be estimated for remote dates based on observed past trends and current observations. ============================================================================== BASIC SOLAR SYSTEM EVENTS Earth/Moon Event Event Description ------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------- New Moon Moon at phase angle 0/360 deg First Quarter Moon Moon at phase angle 90 deg Full Moon Moon at phase angle 180 deg Last Quarter Moon Moon at phase angle 270 deg Penumbral Eclipse Moon passes through faint outer shadow, barely apparent. Partial Eclipse Moon passes only partially through darker inner shadow. Total Eclipse Moon passes totally within the darker inner shadow. Lunar Perigee Moon at minimum orbital distance from Earth Lunar Apogee Moon at maximum orbital distance from Earth Perihelion Earth or planet at minimum orbital distance from Sun Aphelion Earth or planet at maximum orbital distance from Sun Planet Perigee Closest planetary approach to Earth. There could be more than one perigee in a year, depending on the planet. Each year, every planet has at least one perigee point of closest approach. Planetary Apogee Greatest planetary distance from Earth. There could be more than one apogee in a year, depending on the planet. March Equinox Beginning of Northern Spring and Southern Autumn June Solstice Beginning of Northern Summer and Southern Winter September Equinox Beginning of Northern Autumn and Southern Spring December Solstice Beginning of Northern Winter and Southern Summer Mercury Transit Planet Mercury slowly passes across the face of the sun. Venus Transit Planet Venus slowly passes across the face of the sun. ============================================================================== BASIC TIME-RELATED SYMBOLS AND RELATIONSHIPS LT = Local Time in Time Zone TZ TZ = Local Time Zone Offset From UT (±00:00 = UT) (Neg|Pos = West|East) UT = Universal Time DT = Delta T correction estimate computed from NASA polynomial expressions TT = Terrestrial (Dynamical) Time UT = LT − (TZ) TT = UT + (DT) = Astronomical time scale used internally for the computations. or TT = LT − (TZ) + DT The given LT (Local Time) is converted into TT and the TT value is used as the actual time variable for the computations. ============================================================================== REFERENCES: NASA/JPL DEVELOPMENT (DExxx) EPHEMERIS MODELS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jet_Propulsion_Laboratory_Development_Ephemeris ftp://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/pub/eph/planets/README.txt ECLIPSES https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/lunar.html https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/solar.html MERCURY and VENUS SOLAR TRANSITS https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/transit/transit.html https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/transit/catalog/MercuryCatalog.html https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/transit/catalog/VenusCatalog.html DELTA T ESTIMATION https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEcat5/deltatpoly.html https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEhelp/deltaT.html https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEcat5/deltat.html ==============================================================================
